The Challenge De Luxe appeared in 1904 followed a year later by the tropical version. The tropical is a distinct model being made of teak rather than mahogany, it is brass bound and usually fitted with Russia leather bellows.

The Challenge De Luxe was intended to compete with the popular Sanderson 'Hand and Stand' cameras. It possessed a wide range of movements including a front panel held by four arms that provided rise and tilt. All four arms could also be extended forward giving extra extension to the bellows. The arm arrangement was the subject of a patent. A revolving back was fitted around 1909. The tropical was available in a cheaper version fitted with lacquered bellows. The non-tropical (mahogany) model could also be fitted with brass binding. The binding on this example is extensive, some of the loose tongues are of brass rather than the usual wood.
